Literature and Education in Central Europe In the Middle Ages and Early Modern Era
Description of the conference:
The countries of Central Europe were by numerous leading researchers perceived as a region with particular political, economic and social development. To make a complete reflection of the region, at least one more important point of view must be taken into consideration – a cultural sphere. French author André Malraux (1901 –
1976) remarked “culture is what caused that a man became something different than a random phenomenon in nature“. The aim of the conference is to look for commonalities and differences of the metamorphoses of culture in singlular countries. Results of the conference will deepen the awareness of the specifics of the states in Central Europe, exceptionality of cultural development and the need of mutual cooperation. The papers should be primarily aimed at the questions of literature and education during the Middle Ages and Early Modern Era in a whole diverse range. The organisers want to give the participants an opportunity to present their results of the work with the sources of various types. As an example, four basic fields are listed:
official, private and literal written documents (letters, charters, deeds, urbariums...) connected with the history of Central Europe (Hungarian kingdom, Czech lands, Poland, Walachia, Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation....)
biographies of the literates and intellectuals acting in Central European region during the Middle Ages and Early Modern Era, or writing on the local conditions (for instance chroniclers, foreign travellers who visited the region …)
transformations of education and educational level in the region during Middle Ages and Early Modern Era (formation of the first universities, foundation of schools of various confessions, attitudes of rulers and nobility toward education of the habitants)
the language question in the Central European region during the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Era (for instance retreat of Latin, emergence of national languages, attitudes toward mother tongue and intellectuals' language...)
