The Role of Institutions, Knowledge, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship in Regional Development
Call for contributions to an International Science Exploration Event 2019 Seminar
7th-8th of November, 2019 in Rzeszow, Poland Topic Regional development is a function of many factors. Among these factors are different types of institutions, knowledge, innovation and entrepreneurship. Yet, the mechanisms of their influence are unclear. Literature discusses path dependence of the regional knowledge base, but the long-term regional effects related to entrepreneurship, knowledge, institutions and economic development are still incompletely understood. This holds particularly for the specific context of post-communist countries. We look for contributions that investigate how institutions, institutional heritage, knowledge, innovation activities, and entrepreneurship are interconnected shaping regional development in post-communist countries of Eastern Europe. Particularly interesting questions are:
- What determines the performance of regions in post-socialist countries?
- What is different about innovation and entrepreneurship performance of regions after the end of the Soviet-type regime, and other historical disruptions in general? Is there an effect of the historical regional knowledge base on entrepreneurship, innovation, and/or development?
- Why do some regions lose their competitiveness over time while others are economically successful in developing into new industries? What is the role of (persistent) entrepreneurship in explaining such differences?
- What determines the level of persistence of regional innovation and entrepreneurial activities over longer periods of time? How can persistence of regional innovation and entrepreneurship be explained?
